- First space-heating heat pump in the home, on NRCan's qualified products list.
- Oil-heated homes must size the electric system to fully replace oil heating.
- Cornwall Electric customers aren't eligible unless heated by Enbridge gas.
Adding the federal rebate
The federal government says its rebate ($2,000, or up to $10,000 below median income) can be combined with provincial programmes. Example (illustrative, not a quote): an oil-heated home with a 6-ton cold-climate system could get $7,500 from Ontario plus $2,000 federally, assuming both programmes' rules are met. The 1 November rules say amounts depend on household income and equipment cost but don't say whether provincial rebates reduce the federal amount. Unverified. Ontario's thresholds for the higher amount run from $46,981 (1 person) to $158,202 (5+). Check yours.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an energy assessment in Ontario?
Not for the heat pump rebate. It's in the Home Renovation Savings 'no assessment required' stream; you use a programme-qualified contractor.
How long does the Ontario rebate take?
After your contractor's post-installation application is approved, the programme says a cheque should arrive by mail within about 60 days.
I already have a heat pump. Can I get the rebate?
No. Ontario's programme is for first-time installation of a space-heating heat pump.
Is the heat pump rebate available for new builds?
No. New build homes don't qualify, per Home Renovation Savings.
