Federal rebate · Checklist
Installing a heat pump now? Your retroactive rebate checklist
The application portal opens in early 2027, but households that meet the rules and install an eligible heat pump from 1 November 2026 can claim it then. Here's how to protect your claim. A printable version is available for you and your contractor.
Before you sign
- [ ] Get the AHRI number in your quote and check it on the eligible list. Make sure the brand and model numbers match exactly.
- [ ] Use an HVAC contractor to supply and install it.
- [ ] Ask the contractor to confirm the system is sized to heat your whole home. The government encourages this.
- [ ] Confirm no federal heat pump funding was ever paid for this address (for example under the Greener Homes Grant or Oil to Heat Pump Affordability).
- [ ] Confirm no one else in your household has claimed or plans to claim. It's one rebate per household.
- [ ] Check your provincial programme's own rules. Some need pre-approval.
Your receipt must show
- The name and address of the person who will apply. Make sure it's the owner who will apply.
- The name of the installing company.
- The make, model and AHRI number of the equipment.
- The number of heat pumps installed.
- The total project cost, including directly related work like ductwork and electrical upgrades.
After installation
- [ ] Keep the receipt, quote, and photos of the equipment's rating plates.
- [ ] Gather your 2025 tax return (lines 23600 and 43500) if you'll apply for the higher amount, and your spouse's or partner's too.
- [ ] Submit receipts within 6 months. When the clock starts isn't specified (unverified), so don't wait.
Good news
- It can be an emergency or a planned replacement.
- You don't have to remove your old system.
- No energy audit is needed.
Frequently asked questions
What must my receipt show?
Your name and address (the person applying), the installing company's name, the make, model and AHRI number of the equipment, the number of heat pumps installed, and the total project cost including directly related work such as ductwork and electrical upgrades.
How long do I have to submit receipts?
The government says you must submit your receipts within 6 months. It doesn't specify when the 6 months starts, so keep everything and apply as soon as the portal opens.
Can I install it myself?
No. The heat pump must be bought from and installed by an HVAC contractor.
Am I guaranteed the money?
No. No payments are made until the programme launches, and funding is not guaranteed until an application is approved. Rules may still change, but eligibility is assessed on the rules in effect on your install date.
